Wakeman the interview I had just had with Mr. Hastings. vr.

Wakeman sald ho did not care so much about the money being

refunded as he did about the discovery of the guilty party and

hd desired me to do all I could to find out the man, I was in

a dilemma. I did not know what to do. I anticipated that in my

endeavour to discover the culprit I would sometimes he led to

say or do things which might not be approved of by my superiors

and I asked Mr. Wakeman whether I would be pardoned in those

circumstances. In reply to my question Mr. Wakeman nodded an assent. In the course of my enquiries as to who had stolen the

deed from the office I spoke to Mr. Wong Po Fai and also to pr.

Tam Hing Yan. My plans was to say to one clerk in the office

that I had heard that another clerk in the office who was his

intimate friend was strongly suspected of being the man who had stolen the deed and to suggest that he should speak to him and

induce him to refund the money. The language I used was some»

--what as follows:-

"I hear Mr. Chau is strongly suspected of

being the man who has stolen the deed. Now you are his friend and you should speak to him and got him to refund the money. Mr.

Hastings has told me that if he can get back his money he will let the matter drop, but if he doesn't get it back and the thief is not discovered, the whole of the clerical staff here

will be dismissed and banished from the Colony. If Chau will refund the money it will save you and me and every body else. If

ho won't refund it, they may be able to find sufficient ovidence to prosecute and convict him. Of course he can run away now. But there is Lan Tat Sang. He ran away but he has

been arrested again. If Chau runs away the same thing may happen to him. There are only three things for him to do. Pay back the money; run away; or sit tight and do nothing. The consequences attending each he should well consider. There is

nothing better than paying back the money".

I spoke in a similar strain to Chau taking Wong to be suspected person. I adopted this course because I

thought
